Default New Redfoot, New owner, advice needed (picys)

Hi, We have receantly purchased a redfoot and have looked all over the web for advice and the best Forum.

I was hoping that someone could have a look at the pictures and comment on George's health and overall wellbeing. I would also like some advice as to the housing of him as at present he is in a wooden viv (yes, the ones that everybody seems to hate! with the glass doors and lack of ventilation, but the pet shop assured me it would be fine untill i looked on this site)

WE was told he was around 7yrs old, but from his size i would say more like 3yrs old, but i am not sure on that one.

We bought him home yesterday and placed him in his new home. He hasnt done much other than sit in his little hut.

He does not appear to be taking food either at present, but i'm hoping that this is due to his settleing in period and nerves, so we are leaving him alone for a while.

Me and my partner are animal lovers, our family consists of gold fish, 2 rats, 2 cats, 1 rabbit, 2 terrapins and now george.

Any help and advice will be welcomed

Thanks

Andy

Ok now I don't know a lot about these, Blondesarah would probably be the most qualified person on here to answer you questions. However, and please don't take this as gospel but I think (and I stress the think part) from other threads I've seen that redfoots are ok in vivs as they require higher humidity than the med species. Again I don't know if this this is right for reds but the substrate doesn't look ideal. For other torts a 50/50 topsoil sand mix or hemp bedding is normally recommended. I noticed yours is on bark chippings of some kind. It looks healthy to me, eyes are nice and clear. how long is it along the plastron and what is his weight?

It's the bottom half of the shell (tummy) that's where you measure a tort. I use normal kitchen scales as long as they are accurate. I weigh mine when they are asleep and they don't even notice! Personally I won't be able to tell you much from the size/weight but I know when others come on and see your post they will ask so might as well get it posted. for a quick answer

Plastron is underneath the plate that you see you measure from front to back not including head and tail , and yes cooking scales are fine as long as they do ounces as they dont weigh much lol

cheers rob

Hi some say a viv is ok for reds mine live in a converted cabinet open top I wont use sand as reds have big eyes so the sand can iritate them. Mine are on top soil with some repti bark this is fine for reds i also have som spagnume moss for them Wot kind of lighting do you have Also i would get a vet to check for worms just to be on the safe side

We are using a repti glo 5, with a basking area with a standard light. We have sphagnum moss to aid humidity along with repti bark as a substrate. He has a shoe box as a little home for the time being along with a water dish for him to get into and food bowl. The temp of the viv is currently 82.
