Default Worried

I'm worried about letting my tort graze because he might become over weight

So should i just feed him enough to cover his shell in a leafy jacket.

Ok I've been asking a similar question on another site and as I understand it, your torts might eat too much at first but once they have got used to the idea that the weeds are growing out of the ground and are not going anywhere they only eat the best bits (favourites) and wait for them to grow. They can be very picky which will work to your advantage on this topic.

Oh I should of added that this will apply to most torts not all as I have read a couple of posts from Katie who has a bit of a piggy tort <ducks> so she only lets hers graze for short periods before closing the area off.

Lol - a tort with 'food issues' !! Love it! One of my torts needed feeding separately as his ' I am actually full ' bit of his brain switched off and he gutsed. His nickname was Fat B. <g>

Unfortunately Ben - torts do not have this sort of reasoning, being geared to eat what they can find as the season may be short. In a tortoise area you are unlikely to have enough weeds to keep him going in abundance throughout the summer as torts eat them to the ground when they are small, making supplementary feeding necessary. Of course if they had a whole field that would be a different matter indeed

yep Kiara is a piggy. to the extent i'm feeding her n Deemo seperately lol. Deemo's the bigger of the two..by a fair whack..yet if Kiara see's the food it'll all be gone by the time he wakes up enough to notice it lol

The answer I would say is to let him graze, weigh him weekly and see if he is gaining weight fast. If so restrict grazing. The key to over eating is in the hand of the owner Wish I had an owner LOL
