Tamie, some people keep them on towels for the first 2-3 years untill bigger. DOnt know why.

incorrect husbandry advice tomcat..that'll be why they keep them on towels.

unless they're winding down or even in quarantine i can't understand why they'd keep them on towels for that long..it doesnt give them any stimulation.

Yeah i will definately get some pictures...My boyfriends mum has a herman and she contacted the breeder she got hers from 8 years ago and she was so lovely...giving me all little bits and bobs to bring home...she says she always sends a little item from his first home to make them feel loved....she asked me so many questions i felt like i was back in school like an exam before she would let me have him....i will get some pics tomorrow when hes nice and settled...he already seems settled exploring every little thing...i got him for my mum but im really attached...LOL

hehe ya know what that means don't ya..the addiction has started..you can't stop at one i've got two n i'd love more n different species if i had the room.as it is i dont wanna take away from their outdoor area by splitting it... snakes as well..now thats an addiction if ever i saw one

addictions of mad animals runs in our house....we have an african grey parrot...2 bengal leopard cats.....new cornsnake last week called dave (named after me having an imaginary friend called dave a long while back) not the tort which has had about 20 different names already....all the months of looking into all this has definatly paid off...plus i got all you guys to talk to on here...which is good if i ever did miss anything...

i think people keep them on towels because its cheap and convienient.
Just stick the towel in the was when its dirty.
I don't agree with this though

Not sure where this info came from - what a life for a tort! First few days maybe while yolk sacs absorb and so they have a grip for those tiny claws if they topple. TBH though mine rarely tip up as they have lots of footholds.

im only goin to use the towle till morning....just till i get some organic compost/topsoil....just i picked up the wrong stuff...im using the towel tonight so i no hes safe.........

I did not mean you, I just thought the whole idea of keeping torts on towels was somewhat bizarre. I agree it is much better overnight than a risky compost. Good luck with him.

Not true, this will just turn them into a "dormant" state, and will become active again once warmed up..
