Also, cost wise, watch out for a cheaper ballast unit for this light coming out in the next few months - making them, cost wise somewhere like in line with the equivalant T-rex or Zoo Med product.
Could you just say in what way they appear to be superior? I take it you have been using in conjunction with a uvb meter. Are your trials concerning tortoise activity and if so what result do you have?

Lucky Reptile Bright Control 50W, BCE-50

Here is the electronic version (its smaller, has safety features and I supposed to be cheaper to run?)
Lucky Reptile Bright Control PRO 70W, BCP-70

Heres all the bulbs..
Metal Halide

It will only work with one of these sockets (there is basically a special connecter on the ballast that will only connect to these sockets)
Lucky Reptile ThermoSocket + Ref.PRO, Lge, HTRP-2UK

Although if you can find the right connector (Maplins??) you might be able to convert an existing lampholder although not recommended.

The instructions on the box say do not look into the light, (well you cant help it can you) if you do you definately get staring into the sun syndrome and your eyes may sting a bit (PLease note I do not recommend looking dircetly at one of these bulbs) so a reflector is a must.
Could you state what levels of uvb these bulbs put out please.

He said he's been doing the trial for a few weeks, so i very much doubt conclusive proof and results would be available yet. I presume he's judging it off activity, eating behaviour etc...rather than laboratory testing. You'd think the manufacturers would have to do this themselves before putting the item on the market though. (in regards to using 'a uvb meter') Well you'd sincerely hope so anyways.

Hi,

The UVB output claimed by the makers is 60,000 LUX at a distance of 30cm. for the "Desert" version. I have not independently verified this with a UVB meter however. I can not speak for V-MAX but my tests have been limited to what I expect from a retailers point of view, i.e is it easy to assemble, does it work, are there any design flaws that have not been spotted. Is it value for money etc, etc, etc. I have also trialed these with my own animals to see how they work and whats involved. I am not involved with any scientific trials to test the makers claims.

In my opinion these are superior because, a, the ongoing costs are cheaper, b, they burn less electric, c, the light is more intense, brighter and crisper. d, the UVB output is six times that of a powersun.

The only down side is the expense of setting them up, I was a little dissapointed when I discovered the ballasts were only compatible with lucky reptile Pro lamp holders, which adds to the expense rather than being able to convert an existing lamp holder. But its because they use silicone power leads to conduct the power better (apparantly?).

My only one concern is with the high UVB output, if you look at the bulb (do not do this at home) it really stings your eyes, might be bad for reptiles with sensitive eyes, but then you wouldnt be using one of these for them only by mistake. And there is a whole instruction booklet on minimum distances and operating guidelines so it should never happen.

well if price is an issue, you are looking at roughly £140 to set the lucky reptile one up, thats with an electronic Ballast, Roughly £100 with the basic ballast.
