You said it needs to be larger than 5 times the length yet you say 4'x2'x2', that is smaller than 5 times the length.

Read it again, the 4' x 2' x 2' example I gave wasn't for fully grown adult turts, it was a suggested starter tank for 3 young ones.

A fully grown 10" adult using your figures would need a 50" long tank, say it was 6" wide that would mean an 18" wide tank, and you make no mention of the depth so lets assume 18" again.

That would be about a 250 litre tank, you can't fill it to the brim so lets say around 200 litres of water, which is only half the minimum volume required for a single 10" turt.

The 4' x 2' x 2' tank would be just about big enough for a single 10" adult.

Do the maths, 1 x 6" turt at 40 litres per inch = 240 litres, plus 20 litres per inch for the second one a total of 360 litres of water.

Allowing for some air space at the top you'd need a 450 litre tank or thereabouts, that would be a 4' x 2' x 2' or equivalent.

But what happens when they grow bigger?

2 adult MALE maps...at around say 6ish inches max could live in a 4x2x2ft tank..BUT what i did with my turtles when i had them was made a "false" top to the tanks...i could then fill them up to the brim with water and then had a ramp leading to where the lid is on the aquarium...i built a 18inch high surround at the top of the aquarium in which i had a basking area with a uv light etc, unfortunately i have no pics but hopefully you know what i mean...these set ups worked well for mine as they had roughly 8square feet of basking and dry area and the full capacity of the aquarium can then be utilised for water...i used to use filstar xp3`s for filteration (they are external filters)

That depends on the other dimensions of the 4' tank, a 4' x 2' x 2' tank is appox 450 litres as I just said, so if a 10" turt requires 400 litres then that would be just about big enough.

Do you not see that depth is critical though? You could have a 10' tank x 4' wide, but if it was only one inch deep it wouldn't be much use would it?
To do the calculation you need all 3 dimensions, length, width, and depth.

Yes, it is very critical, but as i said, i didnt know what the depth needed to be, so i didnt comment as i didnt want to guess and get it wrong.
