Lucky Reptile Herp Diner - Herb Cobs the picture shows a tortoise on the box but i have never heard of them, coast to coast is selling them as well as other tortoise diets, is this type of food ok? and does it look like corn on the cob as such?
sorry if this sounds a bit thick but i only feed my torts weeds and so can't really understand if this food is not good for tortoises which is what i suspect why do manufacturers make it? |

Most dried pelleted foods have to be stocked by shops like ours due to customer demand, it doesnty mean we promote the use of it, just some customers wont listen and want to buy it. We spend lots of time with our customers explaining the pros and cons of the diets, whether it be fresh weeds, supermarket fair or dried foods and, at the risk of offending a supplier or two, we dont recommend the use of many dried pelleted foods due to renal and other problems that can occur with their use. I wont list the ones we advise not to use, as that would be unfair to the manufacturers and cause problems for us, but it includes all of the pretty coloured pelleted foods. The Lucky Reptile range is actually as it sounds, dried herbs (weeds) and is one of the man made diets that could be beneficial as its based on what they eat in the wild. They also do a dried flower mix too. We would recommend the use of fresh weeds, home grown nastursion and the like as first choice diet, supermarket fair as the second choice and perhaps these Lucky Reptiles diets as a mix in both. All that is in brief form, and of course we would cover which weeds to use, which supermarket food to (sparingly) use and the proportion of the diet it should be.
Just thought it was worth mentioning as I had noticed one or two fingers pointing at my shop on this forum for the use of dried pellets - I'm not a believer or lover of their use in chelonia diets and certainly recognise and advise the use of fresh diets over pellets.

As a private breeder I'm sure you can afford this luxury, but as someone who relies on this to pay their mortgage, like me, its a little different. Two points, firstly the people who make the pellets also supply us with other products ranging from heaters to plastic plants. Commitments mean just that, at times there is little choice on what us shops have to stock ie "you take 100 of these, but you must have 25 of those". Secondly, if that person is 100% convinced that they are going to feed their tortoise on the pellet foods they will only buy them elsewhere. Surely its better for a customer to see the product on the shelf and then be told "dont use that" - it reinforces how important it is not to use it, ie the shop has the product there in front of you but doesnt want to sell it to you?
So to make things clear, at my shop we do stock several products that we dont want to, we dont push the sales of them and are truthful when someone asks about such a product - thats educational, a bonus? Plus, like you, if someone wants to buy one of our little darlings, and says that they want to use pellet foods exclusively, like you, we refuse the sale of said tortoise. I'm afraid, like many arguments I see on these forums nothing as clear cut as it first seems.

Being a breeder does not give me any claim to luxury, quite the reverse in fact as I travel hundreds of miles to make sure my torts go to good homes. Having worked in the retail trade I happen to know that you have every choice of what you purchase and no-one HAS to buy something they do not want. If it is sent unordered the law states you can return it. I do know of one shop which stopped selling these products and Yes, the customaer can go elsewhere but then it's not on your conscience is it!!!!! Your argument about education is basically a non starter, it's a contradiction in terms! All that teaches the customer is that you must be a few cells short of a prison! This forum is just full of dealers trying to put their points forward and failing miserably, other than to prove that's just what they are dealers with no conscience |
