How come? Do you just use the normal on and off switch?

No, you absolutely, definitely, cannot dim a "2 in 1" bulb with a dimmable clamp lamp or any other kind of dimmer, the bulbs don't work like that.
The make of bulb and dimmer is irrelevant, no mercury vapour lamps of any brand are dimmable, nor should they be used with any kind of stat because it won't work and may damage them.

Another little tip, it seems you are asking how to control the temp because a thermostat/dimming switch cannot be used a this is achieved by either raising or lowerning the lamp closer or further away from the animal to achieve the desired temp . HTH

thanks

I would never use stats to control temps. Tortoises need to have variable temps. Keeping temps steady causes problems with them Save your money and position the lamp to make 30 degrees, the rest of the enclsure takes care of itself
