Im getting a Zoo med UV Powersun with a Zoo med dimmable clamp lamp and people have said to get a thermostat. Can anyone reccomend a thermostat and say what they actually do?

thanks

A thermostat just controls the heat. A combined UV and heat bulb cannot be used with a thermostat but seperate can.

If your getting a Powersun 2in1 bulb then i wouldnt use a thermostat beacsue the bulb might blow.

So just use the dimmable bulb holder

A dimmable clamp lamp will not dim a powersun it will void your warranty on it, you should use an on/off basic clamp lamp.

The dimmable clamp lamps are designed to be used with incandescent bulbs, i.e "normal" spot lights. The Zoo Med Powersun is a mercury vapour bulb which is self ballasted. This means it has to be either on or off, if the power supply into it is reduced it will not ignite (light up). If it is switched off and then on again in a time frame less than 15 minutes a safety feature will kick in and prevent the light from igniting also. This is why mercury vapour bulbs such as the t-rex and zoo med cannot be used with a thermostat or dimmer switch. They are therefore uncontrollable and only for use in viviariums that allow heat to escape (or else the overheat safety feature will switch it off), above screen mesh enclosure or used in open top situations. Hope this helps

The one in the link given, the description is for a normal clamp lamp but the picture is a dimmable version.
