I am currently involved in some research and would find it useful to gather the following statistics on the species that require hibernation:
1. Numbers of keepers who hibernate hatchlings (less than a year old) 2. Numbers of keepers who allow their tortoises to hibernate naturally, ie dig themselves a hibernation chamber in the garden. 3. Number of keepers who hibernate their tortoises in the fridge 4. Number of keepers who do use the fridge for hibernating tortoises that provide an air pump to force air into the fridge. 5. Number of keepers who do use the fridge method who just rely on the fridge door being opened periodically for "change of air". This data will be added to the details we are accumulating in conjunction with various vets and other sources. Our findings will be eventually published. Thanking all that participate in advance.

I will be hibernating my 6 in the fridge. They vary in age from this years hatchlings to a 3yr old.
they will be in my everyday fridge so i will rely on the fridge door being opened daily.there will also be a dish of water in there for the air humidity. hth |

I have two four month old hatchlings. They will be hibernating this year in the fridge, door being opened daily for hopefully around 8 weeks.

Keep it up please! Must be more keepers than this that can participate? Plus please remember that I need more details, just saying I'm hibernating my tortoises without giving any further details is not giving me the details I'm searching for. Thanks!!

Kerry, your answer, along with most of the others, was perfect for what I was looking for, but "I hibernate my tortoise in the garage for XXX time" isnt really the data I'm collating. I want more details into the hibernaculum for example. So, as a prime example, the data I need is pretty much how Kerry supplied her details. I was also surprised how few answers to this post, there seems to be a high percentage of tortoise keepers on the forum yet either many are not hibernating their tortoises or have not participated on this posting. Perhaps many forum users that could participate have not seen the posting and this will "bump" it to their attention? Thanks in advance!

Hibernaculum = large polybox 4ft x 2ft x 2 ft(to contain individual hibnating boxes containing individual torts) with temp probes situated on edges and centre of box. Purpose built in northfacing concrete garage - no windows, situated in position which maintains temps of 5 degrees give or take a couple of degrees throught winter. Only works if you have correct building and situation to maintain temps. Does not work as a rule in garages attached to houses as temps tend to get too high unless stone build etc. Also does not work with metal doors as these act as a radiator on sunny days. Not yet known a room within a house to maintain ideal hibernation temps unless a cellar as windows allow too much heat exchange and consequent loss of weight of torts, plus humidity is far too low to be safe IMHO.
Safely hibernated tortoises with no losses for over 2o years |
