Ok i've just had a 'tortoise' which is infact a terrapin, i think a yellow bellied slider dumped with me by a guy who's mate found it, give it to him, and it's now ended up with me!
It appears to be VERY thin, covered in lesions, and unfortunatly appears to be dead. However it was very cold, and bought to me in a cardboard box with shredded newspaper (kinda old skool tort hibernation). I've now put it in a spare viv with some water, on a heat mat, not ideal i know, but how long should i leave it before i class it as dead? Is there anything i can do to see if it is alive without hurting it? Hope this doesn't sound too clinical and cold! |

I'd turn the heat mat off, and if you have an anglepoise lamp position that over it instead at a distance of about a foot for a 60W bulb, try pulling on a back leg and see if there's any reaction.
Is it withdrawn into the shell, or are it's legs and head hanging out limply? |

Don't think it had been attacked, just minor wounds all over, tried opening the eyes and touching them, but no response. Just makes me sick that idiots dump terrapins regularly. This was bought to me because i work in a pet shop, and i regularly have people come in with tales of terrapins they have found looking for advice.
I have defo classed this terrapin as dead, which sucks, but cheers for the ideas folks! |
