Default wierd question ~

this is for my proteus assignment..

they've let me know of some of the things i have been marked down on..

and one was this ~

do tortoises need heat at night?

it's the mediterranean spur thighed tortoise (Testudo Graeca Graeca) i'm doing it on, if that makes a difference.

i missed it out of my assignment.. along with a couple of other things...
but i can't find any info on google about it.

also... what happens if the hibernation temp is too high?

is it just that the tortoise won't go to sleep?

Night time heat not as such, but the temperature needs to be kept constant over 10*C

If the temps rise during hibernation it could bring the tort out of hibernation prematurely..if the temp was then to drop again this could be devastating.

and if hibernation temps are too high than the tortoise will wake and use up energy and then go back to sleep again. If this process continues it will die because it will use up all energy.

Why never below 10? Sometimes even in the Med at either end of the season the temps drop below this and providing a nice warm day follows all is well. It's part of a tortoises natural cycle

true, its just that andy highfield said..

"Minimum overnight tempertures should not fall below 10*C however for mediterranean tortoises"
