60% soil to 40% play sand

is that by weight or volume

So long as both substrates are similarly damp (if that makes sense) then there is not a lot of difference either way. If you used weight and one was wet and one was dry then it would not work out so good. I usually guess anyway and go for more soil than sand as in the wild. I sometimes add crushed limestone to enclosures too to give a stronger bond for digging in the case of russians.
