I read horsefields like to dig so should have a substrate to let them do so

There is a huge difference between digging and tunneling. Hermans will dig. I had one dig right underneath a bush the other week to hibernate. Horsfields like to lilve in tunnels though and so an indoor enclosure is never really suitable for them. The tunnels have to be strong enough for them to live in without collapsing and so need to be outdoors Indoors a horsfield will dig and scfratch continually in the corners of enclsures in frustration. I find this upsetting but I know some do it

Yes, if you were not prepared to go the extra mile for a horsfield. I have both but would not keep the horsfields indoors with the same regime as a hermanns at either end of the season. I have two tiny horsfield babies in doors right now as thye are determined to hibernate and I would like them to go a bit longer before doing so but it is not easy to keep theri substrate correct for constructing burrows Put it this way I will not sell my horsfield babies to people who intend to keep them on table tops
Hope this helps

That's right leggy. People say there is no difference but I have yet to see a horsfield settle indoors. As you say yours is rescued and I've been there with them trying to get them to settle, but that incessant scratching is awful to listen to. The poor little things are trying to construct a tunnel with nowhere to go It's like keeping a bird with nowhere for it to perch, very stressful.

I know it's not ideal, but could you not supply them with artificial burrows if you have to keep them indoors, constructed out of drain or sewer pipes?
