If its sterilised topsoil (which is what is reccomended) there is no need. I know some people who heat their topoil in the oven before using it. I don't and have never had any problems.

I never freeze mine, but for smaller tortoises i always remove all the soil and give a good clean out every couple of months (i spot clean every day).

In my opinion freezing topsoil will not remove bacteriar/bugs etc. It will just make them lie dormant until it's warmed up again. I have heard of people putting it in the oven which i think would be more effective but as everyone else has said if it's sterilised there shouldn't be any need anyway. Hope this helps
