Default First Tort?

I`ve really been wanting a tortoise for a long time, since i was a kid, and i`ve decided now is the time to start looking into it.

Just a "what species" question really. I know there is no such thing as a beginner tortoise in that they all need extensive care etc, and i will be reading up fully on various torts before i make a decision.

I`ve been looking at different species, but i really don`t know which would be best. The whole hibernation thing is the main bit that worries me, is it easy to hibernate them? Or would i be better with a species not needing to hibernate? I`m looking for a small/medium size, ideally not bigger than 2 feet adult size.

I`ve kept corn snakes for a while, and geckos and terrapins but this is my first "more specialist care" rep, if that makes sense!
Any suggestions? Hints, tips etc greatly appreciated!

I would not say ugly, but plainer to look at. The personalities more than make up for this though. Until you have seen horsfields head bob and run you've seen nothing LOL They are amazing if kept in correct outdoor environment

horsfields ugly!?!?!?! how dare you, Deemo's giving me a disgusted look, and rightly so!

I have to admit, althoughg i've not personally owned other species my aunt and my mother have done in the past (both now deceased) and horsfields had by far the biggest personalities, characters, and actually seemed to bond more with their owner..as weird as that may sound. They're also very independant, and if they want to climb and get stuck somewhere, they wont appreciate you trying to help them!

horsfields are wonderful little torts! When we move into a bigger house (thus bigger garden) I might consider red foots. but as it is, i only have room for one big enclosure for the torts n i dont want to half their accomodation
