but yes i agree tortoises should be kept outside. The only reason some horses aren't able to is mans greed for specific needs/uses..thus breeding finer breeds etc. Tortoises should be left as nature intended. Walking little dustbins (given half a chance)full of character

Ah yes but then we get to the topic of 'If you cannot give optimum requirements should they be kept in this country?' same as torts. I know I would not. I do not have contact with horses any more as I cannot afford such luxuries nowadays, but when I did I was fully aware of the problems of turning a horse out after winter onto new grass so there was always rough grazing available - moorland type grassland etc Syabling a horse completely over winter and then turning onto grass to suit us is always a disaster waiting to happen IMHO. I would no more accept the various problems associated with horses being kept in small areas than I would any animal

I would not plan to bring in at night, that takes away their choice of what time to get up and what time to retire which is an important part of their natural life. It avoids excessive stress too. Of course you need to check they have gone indoors if cold weather is forecast but that is all. Obviously now is wind down time to hibernation so you need to be giving some more control to make sure they wind down properly.
