Put it this way my outdoor enclosure is 6 metres by 3 metres and I know I will have to make it bigger once they are adults. I have no idea how I'm going to make something big enough inside but the bigger the better! Luckily I have a year to think about it

inside it's stated 4ft by 4ft however this isn't meant for permanant use. outdoors is always preferable where possible. If suitable outdoor accomodation will never be available then torts shouldnt be recommended in my honest opinion

In my opinion keeping an adult tortoise in a table as a planned measure is much like keeping a horse in a stable or a dog in a kennel . I suggest anyone doing this should imagine coming back in a second life as a battery hen

off topic but stabling for some species of horse is required. the finer species such as Arabians etc. simply couldn't cope with our winters, even if rugged up. Also the grass can be too rich in summer and can cause colic. Had a stallion on my old yard who was so prone to colic. vet never established a conclusive cause, so in the height of summer hte poor sod was stuck in stables or indoor paddock Suppose complete outdoor living isn't always appropriate.

but yes i agree tortoises should be kept outside. The only reason some horses aren't able to is mans greed for specific needs/uses..thus breeding finer breeds etc. Tortoises should be left as nature intended. Walking little dustbins (given half a chance)full of character

Yes and no.

To be honest luv it all depends on how you've got your garden set up.

Like i've said before i had a heated shed/adapted dog house (kind of size you may use for a German Shepherd dog to give you some idea) that was then placed against the main wall. (for extra insulation from cold) with a little doorway (dad boarded it up n cut a doorway in for the torts)

So if it was too cold the torts could go in there.. to be honest during spring/summer/autumn i never had problems.but for my own peace of mind (and the fact deemo used to follow me in) they came in at night.

Also some people use cold frames/greenhouses.

Providing their is plenty of shelter and room to dig, in theory they should be okay.

I gave a heated shed as horsfields shouldn't be kept on damp, and as you know british weather can be shocking

so, for an adult...

permanent outside housing, with a warm shelter. But can be brought in at night?

and what would you use to heat an oudoor 'house'

we had a basking lamp set up for early morning, and then a stat set up so that if the temp got below 10c it would kick back on. Not ideal but they didnt go in their much at all.

I know alot of people dont use any heating at all and just offer an outhouse/greenhouse with nice deep soil for them to thermoregulate themselves.

If they dig down they effectively take themselves out of any winds/draughts anyways.

Ask Sue how she takes care of her torts, who as far as i know, live outsdie all year round, and nighttime too.she's the best person to ask i think. Or Tams..i'd say phoebe but not heard from her in a while
