Default I'm a newbie

Hi all,

I thought I just do a quick post first! I have 2 terrapins - a brown and green one.

I believe the brown terrapin is a False Map.

I'm not sure exactly the green one - I think its a cooter or a yellow-belly.

May be someone in here can clarify?

Are mine aquatic terrapins?

They are almost certainly aquatic, or at least semi-aquatic, only sea turtles are truly aquatic spending all their time in the water and only coming ashore to lay eggs. Most freshwater turtles (terrapins) spend a lot of time out of the water basking, and also lay their eggs on land.

If you can post some good clear photos we can tell you what species yours are.

Not sure hpw to post pitcures in here. According to your guide...I cannot find the 'Manage Attachements' button.

I'd say the one in the foreground is a Mississippi Map Graptemys pseudogeographica kohnii, the other one may be a Peninsular Cooter Pseudemys peninsularia.

It's not always easy to tell for sure because both species freely interbreed with other subspecies, especially in the crowded turtle farms where most of them come from it's quite common to get cross-bred animals which have features of more than one subspecies.

The general markings of your map are those of a Mississippi, but Miss Maps aren't supposed to have a horizontal "bar" across the eye and it looks as though yours might have? It's hard to tell from that angle.
