on my paper work for my hermans it says
this certificate is valid until the tortoise reaches a plastron length of
100mm, when the specimen must be microchipped and a new certificate must be applied for
is this wrong or will i have to apply for a new certificate
when he/she reaches 100mm
That is true, but you only need a cert if you are planning to sell or breed from your tortoise- otherwise its simply a pet animal- so microchipping and owning a cert isnt necessary

the chip that goes into the tort or any animal carries all the owners inforation on it, therefore (for example) if you find your stolen tort you can prove its yours cos your info would be on the microchip!

As there are now several species of tortoise protected by Cites, they require paperwork identification to prove that this animal is in fact captive bred or legally imported into the country. In animals that all look very similar with no easily distinguishable markings, CITES requires that this paperwork be updated with a microchip number once the animals are big enough (this is not just tortoises, also snakes and other reptiles protected by the same legalities). This not only helps to identify who the animal belongs to if it is lost, but it ensures that it can be proven that this is the correct animal with the correct paperwork and is legally in the country.

This is however only a legal requirement if you intend to sell the tortoise, as previously stated, you don't have to update the license with a chip number unless you intend to sell or breed the tortoise, but then you will have to.

ive got my two microchipped, the only reason ive had that done is because if they go missing, a vet can identify them as mine

All I can say is that I have my guys all chipped and they have had no problems

Thanks to all for the advice i think i will get it chipped but will leave it a couple of months then get it done before summer when it will spend most time outside. Give it chance to grow a little bit more i guess the bigger it is the less annoying the chip will be. I know it won't have grown much but every little helps.
