Default Pellet food for Torts.

HI all,

Before anyone jumps I dont use the product I feed weeds.

If someone goes into a rep shop and buys this food and it says it is for torts, but you all say its no good they should be done for misrepresentation, how can someone say in black and white its for tortoises, and you all say it can kill.

It does get confusing for people shops say it alright, you say it can kill torts

If it can kill it should be taken off the shelves.

the problem is it isn't an instant death. so how can you get it taken off the shelves? Alcohol can be a killer..but thats not taken off the shelves..admitedly you need to be 18+ to buy that tho

the problems arise from the high protein levels, it can cause rapid growth and it can also cause eventual kidney failure.

we're not saying shops should be done for misrepresentation n diont think anyone has said that on the forum but the product is very misleading.

Some shops sell the product as they get it in with other items..others sell it because some people are lazy n want an easy option, or because they know no better..or because thats what the shop tells them is good for the tort.

Now i'm not aware if the pellets are still as ill advised in regards to red foots etc..but i wouldnt personally use them with meds n africans like your leopards as both need low protein high fibre diets.

their downfall is that they are still not well taken by tortoises and that little research has been done

Hi all,

Thanks for replys, I have looked at the T Rex on on eBay and it states it is the correct diet for torts. very misleading.

When we got our torts Hermans, the people we got ours off are TT members and one has done the TT course so we were given the correct advice from day one and have a specialist rep vet in Bradford.

When shops are inspected for their licence renewel why are the animals not checked for the right diet most shops I have been into keep in vivs and look like they feed mixed salad surely anyone can see the difference between weeds and salad.

yes they can, and the simple answer is that the inspectors giving and renewing the licenses don't have a clue about what the animals and individual species requirements are.. and this is true of alot of reps not just chelonians, for example i've seen alot of chams in terrible states recently. Before i moved house a teeny tiny baby corn in a big viv on its own looking petrified..well i say viv..adapted fish tank, all clear sides and an unprotected light bulb.

until there are people with the power as such who know what they're on about nothings gonna change..as sorry a state as it is
