Question Worming Horsfields

Faecal exams that I have performed show pinworms and their eggs in my 3-5 year old Horsfield. When last tested by the vet 12 months ago all was clear so I suspect he has contracted them via another animal in my collection (my beardie has had them in the past).

I am going to try to get some Panacur from the vet to treat him and sterilise his table etc and keep him in a spare viv on paper until the things are gone.

My questions are:

Is panacur the correct treatment?
How do you give it?
How common are pinworms in tortoises?
Are the eggs airborne? As the beardie and Tort are in different rooms and do not come into contact with each other and my hygiene routines are good.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Jon

They are not airborne but can live in the substrate.
Yes Panacur is the best to treat this.
Follow instructions, place some on some forbidden food such as cucumber.

I stomach tube mine it is the best way as you can get the dose right. I buy 2.5% for small torts. Stomach tubing is not easy but it is useful to learn. When I first did it I was s###ing myself but if you follow the execellent advise on the TT website you can't go wrong.

I think its gret if your experienced enough to do it.
But please dont go attempting this without supervision from an experienced person.

Yes you are right it is quite difficult and I would not force anybody to do it as that is what vets are for but it is the most effective way of adminisrating (sic)drugs.

yes that is fair enough but if your tort becomes sick you or your vet may have to as not all drugs can be injected.

Default Worming Horsfield

Just to close the loop my vet (Matt Brash) actually advised against Panacur as it is no longer effective against all strains of worm and injected .02ml of vamisol (i think it was) which he apparently uses widely at zoos. He stressed that Panicur is ideal as a precautionary wormer, especially when lots of animals were being wormed but he preferred this more direct approach when treating single torts. Repeat injection in 2 weeks and awaiting faecal sample result in the meantime.

I agree and only ever do my torts this way, takes roughly five secs per tort, but if you do not know where the opening is for a torts trachea it would only take a matter of seconds to kill them
