Default Finding a mate, help needed!!

Hi All,

Please check my blog for an update, We have a 4yr old Horsefield and have recently introducted a female to the tank. She is a 3 year old, we have them in a seprated area but so they could still get to know one and other, After much head bobbing and sniffing, I have introduced them in togther and they seem to get on ok, recently they have started to occaisilaly nip or try to byte each other, can someone give me some advice on what to do weather this is common?? or if I need to put her into a vivarium of her own? she was a rescue an unwanted gift, so me being a sofety took her in. They are both in perfect health and as you can see on the live cam have a great home. I am just a little worried about the nipping.

Hiya i keep horsfields and they are evil when mating.
You really need about 3-5 females to one male.
I have to keep my males away from my females.
I urge you to keep them apart especially if this female is young as the male can damage her insides.

Vivariums are a big no no for tortoises, tortoises need a warm spot and a cool spot this does not happen in a vivarium.

Have you got UVB? This is essential to your tortoises growth.

Also what do you feed? weeds are a must no pellets

They both eat correctly, lots of herbs, sweet potato, squash, figs, rose buds, and the vet also advised to sprinkle once or twice a week with a vitimin dust, they also have a calcium stick in the tank. Im not sure you can see from there but their is a large hold cut in the lid, although this is a vivarium it has very little in the way of a roof. Thanks for the advice I will take the female out in put her into her own enclosure

sweet potato, squash, figs

These are a big no no.

Horsfields are only awake for 3-4 months of the year in the wild, therefore are eating machines so you really have to watch what they eat.
You have to think wild would they come across sweet potato in the wild?
Weeds are the only way to go, so many tortoises die in the UK each year to bad advice from pet shops and inexperienced vets.

Can i ask why you use a red light? can you not change this to a normal spot bulb. This red colour must really confuse him. I cannot say enough how important it is to have UVB also
