Lets leave it at that.
True, but everyone needs to see the whole picture. If we stop buying wild caught tortoises from shows then the dealers will not buy them, thus stopping the illegal imports.
Thats my point anyway.
I dont want an arguement. We have enough of it on here.

I really do not like this comparison at all, and it is used time and time and time again...

In the begining, man hunted/ate tortoises to the extremes, making certain species now extinct...not just torts, but many other animals...

In the begining, man hunted man, sending back aboriginal skulls to the mother land, for a small fee of course...

Should we not learn from man's past?!

Sure, most of my adults were wild caught (35+ years ago) but I had no control over that situation...

In the begining...is a rather p*** poor excuse, do you not think?...T.T.

PS. I'm just a doddery old tort keeper...what do I know!

it was'nt ment as a P**s poor excuse i was just stating that most if not all common pets were all wild at some point but use as humans cant seem to leave thing alone an always want what we cant have.

i agree it is wrong to illegally import animals into the country but people still do, This whole post started out as a question about keeping the temps right for a tortoise.

BUT AS FU**ING USUAL people have started a argument i have left many reptile based site because of this stupid inbuilt reaction to start having a go just cos you dont agree with someone's opinion.

well i'm sorry but say what you want i dont really give a shite i spend a hell of a lot of money on my pets for housing, food and vets bills(if needed) yes you and sarah may know alot about tortoises but it doesnt give you the right to start a argument about were they came from when all i asked was a simply question.

i hope a mod or member of admin read this thread an lock it cos i cant be arsed with know it alls who just wanna have a go

I agree - I am sick and fed up of seeing offers for German bred torts etc and watching people burying their heads in the sand making out these torts are OK because the certs say captive bred.

Draughts are irrelevant, these are tortoises, lots of draughts outdoors

You can leave it at that if you like, but there is still the issue of someone saying 'I will buy these imports no matter what' and then going on to ask how to care for them! Flipping amazing! No wonder so many have to be replaced each year by the pet trade!

CITES in Bristol have their hands tied. They do not decide who can import and who cannot, they are there purely to put the stamp on what someone a lot further down the line and in another country with different legislation, has decided is a legal transaction. They do not have a clue where half of these animals come from originally and many of the DEFRA workers will tell you that. There are a lot of workers for DEFRA who leave their jobs each year due to the frustration of how things work - fact!
