Should we not learn from man's past?!

Fantastically put TT. I too get sick of people coming at me and stating that my torts were mostly wild ones years ago, therefore making me as bad as the people importing today. I keep on telling them that given the choice I would happily take them back to live in their mother country, but without this option I am equally happy to spend hundreds of pounds each year to give them as near to that existence as I possibly can.

No argument here...

I just picked up on what you said, what a lot of people say, all the bloody time...Its used like a "get out of jail free card".

And in my opinion, to say things were done like this in the past, therefore whats the big deal, lets all carry on doing these things that were done in the past...IS a p*** poor excuse, and I am sick of hearing it...

If you've got a problem with my posts, then hit the report button mate...T.T.

Now beat me with a gone of wet cod if I am wrong but did not your original post state that you expected a reaction? If so why get your knickers in a twist when you get one and claim this puts you off posting. Maybe you would be better off on Slowcoach or Tortoise Town or better still on Tortoise Trust where you will get lots of these reactions so putting you in the minority where you belong. Too many people start a thread with the same cocky attitude and then can't handle it when they do not get the reaction they are looking for, weird!

Can I just ask why you're buying them in Hamm?

Theres not a big price difference in Hamm and Uk breeders, plus you have the comfort of a healthy tortoise and no nasty vet bills!!!

Cocky attitude ?! Come off it Sue he just said I am buying a tortoise in Hamm and I want some information about it. Nothing wrong with that I don't think he ment to offend anybody. If he said I am going down to a barcelona street market and i would like to pick up some illegal torts hows the best way to smuggle them home then I would expect him to get it big time.

Hamm is very popular in this forum there are stickys everywhere

Ok, you say you don't want to buy a tort from a pet shop, so why can't you buy one from a UK breeder? There are enough of them about, and if you buy from them not only are you not giving money to the trade in wild torts, but the breeder can make sure you have all the correct info you need. I am still in touch with the breeder I got my second tort from nearly three years ago, and I know if I have any problems she is just an email away! I'm also collecting another two from her in March

My first tort came from a pet shop, via Germany just because I didn't know any better. But I wouldn't do it again, not because he is unhealthy or anything, but I don't see why we should put torts through all the stress of travelling from one country to another when we don't actually have to.

I have to disagree, draughts in hot countries are irrelevant but not in Britain where it is cold and where tortoises do not naturally live. In my experence animals raised above the ground in their shelters are better protected from possible RNS.

just my opinum.

isn't RNS caused by high humidity therefore little ventilation?

so if there are draughts the ventilation is increased and it isnt as humid in the table therefore less chance od RHS.

I could be completly wrong of course..just my opinion.

And my opinion<g> - having kept torts for well over 25 years now and never having had one suffer from RNS I can say they live quite happily outdoors in the summer months with added heat for a limited time (usually in bad weather). My russians live in burrows below ground (their choice as they know better than we do) and are beautifully smooth (to subject them to life raised above ground would be to mind, unkind), healthy and with not a sign of RNS despite the poor little devils coming from a customs seizure which was infected with crypto. One well known organisation insisted they live in vivs while small (approx 4 years old) and the same organisation lost more than I am sure they would admit to. Mine came from another well known organisation which thought differently and all are thriving Would you like to see their first babies?
