I've never heard of it but I dont think it would be as good. just stick to UVB tubes.

There is no substitute for uvb lights. Theoretically it is possible to use D3 only but you would beed to be very clever to get the dosage right and when you think of the feel good factor of uvb and the way torts react to it, it's a pretty poor substitute. Nutrobal gives far better supplementation than gimmicky stuff like solar drops but to use it without uvb to my mind is pretty unkind to the tortoise. Imagine living in a room indoors all winter with no access to outside. The damage to the mental state would soon become obvious and we are not native to the Mediterranean

sorry to hijack he thread but can i ask WHY Tortoises need UV radiation. I know they need it but I'm interested in what it does for them.

Also, I know UV stand for ultra-violet but what does the 'A' and 'B' (UVB, UVA) mean.

anyone know?

UVA and UVB are different wavelengths, UVA is closer to the visible light spectrum.

They need UVB to produce vitamin D3, which they need to process calcium into bone and shell.

I would reccomend buying a combined UV and heat lamp if you can fork out for one. They are cheaper in the long run (rather than buying a new tube every 6 months) and give out TONS more UVB than a tube light does.

I noticed the difference within a few days of switching and haven't looked back!

So does that mean it has a longer wavelength and cant penetrate as much as UVB?

Ok, Cheers

I guess so, I think UVB and UVC are the ones that do the real damage when you get sunburn.
