Are you sure it doesn't mean gaining healthy weight on the trotoise before allowing its guts to clear for hibernation.

Good point dude.

TEENY if you could quote what the book said, word for word. It might be a mis-understanding.

Jason =)

It says to give your tortoise a hearty meal 2-4 weeks before hibernation.

Oh i get it now maybe it means you don't feed them after that.

BIG APOLOGY to Mr and Mrs Bartlett who wrote the book.....

I wont apologise for the alfalfa thing tho!!!

I still stand by the corn snake temps error though lol. caused outrage on the snake thread a while back when someone quoted it

Several heatmats under the tank for a turtle? hmmmmm wouldn't imagine that'd transfer heat to well? Not sure though, also the majority of species I believe (I read on here) only require heated water when youngsters. And that aquarium heaters are the best bet as they have in built thermostats.

Could be completely wrong like, i really don't do turts as gorgeous as they are!

the book I saw was called 'terranium pets' tort on the cover.

Not A good start. Lol.

Anyhow, I open it up. terranium, dog food, fruit, veg.. Pretty sad really.

you say 'times have changed'. well yeah...a bit. They're still not good enough IMO.

another book in that library was from 2002 if i remembr correctly. Pretty much the same advise, maybe a bit better.

Once pet shops can look after them right, then we'll see change. Why aren't the inspectors told, why don't they understand.

It f*****g breaks my heart to see the torts in the reptile shops all crammed into a small viv, with other species, ramming against the glass.

Everyweek there seems to be another person on here thats been told the wrong thing from a book or pet shop

why can't something be done! This can't go on much longer. This just can't happen...

the inspector's who inspect shops don't have a clue regarding exotic species. they only know what's supposed to be suitable..so cleanish vivs, water.

what they don't take into consideration is each individual species' needs. UVB should be a basic for any tort, yet it's not. Alot of shops don't even have that. A basking spot not a hot viv..often i've seen vivs with either no heat or the whole viv heated... heat mats causing dehydration..not to mention the risk of burns, electric shock etc if the torts defecate or urinate on the wires..

i saddens me that with snakes people are shunned if they try to put a heat mat in a viv unprotected..yet they're quite happy to do it with tortoises.

Until they have exotics specialists inspecting these shops we're not gonna get anywhere and it's a sorry state of affairs
