Basically the shop man has no idea what he is talking about - well he does but he is seeing those money signs rather than reality! You do not need a thermostat, not only are they unecessary but are detrimental to the health of torts. A tortoise living in constant temps with regular switching on and off of lights is likely to be confused and will certainly be a high candidate for vet treatment in the future A clamp lamp is not necessary so long as you have somewhere safe to hang the heat lamp, could be a bonus though if you do not have an overhead hanging position. An infra red bulb is a waste of money especially if red in colour. A supermarket 100 watt spot lamp will cost around £1.50 and do exactly the same job. Re the fitting the finger in by his leg advice, ask the silly man how he thinks the tort gets his head inside! It's there to give him room. This means that every one of my torts is underweight - not! The only way to check this is to measure him from one end of the shell to the other (straight line on the floor and not over the curve) and to weigh him, this will show if he is underweight or not. Do not buy any of these things he has suggested, they are not necessary. No additional heating is needed overnight either. Always think of what he would have in the wild and the answer is usually staring you in the face. Hope this helps |

OR can get bulbs that have UVB already in them. They are more expensive but last longer and are the better option. You do not need a thermostat for either of the above options. Jason =)
