I personally would not try and fatten up a tortoise. If mine was a little under weight, than I would give him enough food so that he puts on about 4g a month.

Hi
It's not a good idea to fatten up a horsfield. They are such a greedy species that they will do this (and more) all by themselves. Just feed a good diet and if he is worm free (your vet should have done a faecal test to see if this is why he is underweight), weigh weekly and allow around 2-4 grams monthly weight gain for normal progress.

because they only get to eat for a small amount of the year in the wild- Russians are oppurtunist feeders- I would feed as normal (Enough to cover his shell or as much as he can eat for 20 minutes) and just give him plenty of baths to keep him hydrated- this might be why he is underweight? My Hermanns is always underweight, but as he is W/C I think he just has very smooth natural growth, I hibernate him and he is fine each year- A little underweight isn't too bad.

replied in your other thread as well..all very confusing coz the same infos in several places, but i'm guessing it wasn't a tort specialist/exotics specialist you saw, as 'fattening' up is something that can be dangerous to tortoises, rapid growth is a big no no. if you follow Sue's advise (wizzasmum) you won't go wrong.
