They've bought alot of thier torts from local breeders, one in particular is a friend of mine who hatches lots of meds, mainly ibera and marginateds. doesn't like people round his house so sells to trade. He's a top tortoise keeper see him at Norfolk tortoise club from time to time.

Sorry I will stick my neck out and say I do not believe you have taken your own captive bred chelonia to a shop to sell for you. Breeders put a lot of time, money and effort into breeding their torts and I have not met one yet that would sell through a pet shop.

Sorry your neck must be like my snake necks then!! I put a great deal of effort, time and money into my animals regardless whether they are my fish, dogs, birds, herps, horses or others. I am more than happy to sell/exchange my animals that I have bred to Swallows at East Harling. The Livestock Manager is very competent and knowledgeable on his charges and others. In fact he even runs a Chelonia Club! I bought a Rhino Iguana from another shop and he was still happy to discuss the issues and best way for it to be housed prior to me purchasing the Rhino

The exhibits he has set up to display to customers what size the juveniles get to and include a massive RTC, Sulcatas, terrapins and Cuvier's crocodiles as well as large boas. You must agree that this must be applauded so people do not buy sulcatas when hermanns or horesfields would suit there set ups better

Testament as well is the fact that they breed a number of reptiles there.

I would rather sell/exchange my animals there where I do not have people around my property and also where I know that they will be looked after and not sold to muppets.

I am a hobbyist not a breeder and enjoy my animals for me not anyone else. Cant think of anything worse than people coming around looking at my set ups.

No I am not Clackett??!!??

I know several people who breed and sell through shops. Tortoises, boa and python morphs.

You do have avery blinkered view of the trade, what you suggest is ludicrous is something I know happens.

you automatically assume the worst. Granted it does happen and is wrong, but any positive effect you have by spreading the word is a bit undone by the fact you come accross as a bit of a fanatical nutter. We're talking seriius axe grindage here...

No one doubts it happens but not everyone *must* beleive that it happens with every single shelled creature in the trade. not everyone is going to share the same opinions of how evil it is either.

I'm sure there are torts that dies in horrible conditions during importation, but i'm sure it's not as bad as it used to be and i'm sure that even you must realise there is more demand for turts than the UK CB market can provide. Again kind of illustrated by the fact that someone is seeking a turt here and not one person has been able to come forward and say "i know somone who has some, i'll ask if I can give their details to you" all people can do is slate pet shop animals.

Without these imports no animals would be breeding in the UK.

Point in case:

We're currently selling some UKCB chelonia, the breeder would rather sell through us than deal with all the hassle that selling animals (or anything) can bring.

Well I sell my baby tortoises to pet shop. I have known them for years so I trust them. I thought that having UKCB in our shops would be a good thing ?
