Bearing in mind that most breeders hibernate their tortoises(if a hibernating species), they would most likely lay first eggs late April and therefore start hatching JUne, it is usually July - August onwards before most breeders will sell their torts and then only if you fully understand their needs. Of course some breeders will keep some tortoises until the following year in which case they will be coming out of hibernation around March.
You do not say what species you are looking at buying.
Set-up would be a tortoise table or similar open topped accomodation (can be as economical as a bookshelf turned on it's back with shelves removed or a wall cupboard), lighting, consisiting of either a self ballasted mercury vapour heat/uvb combined or a seperate uvb tube and heat spot lamp, either way works out at around £80 all in, substrate of either hemp or soil sand mix and a few logs, slates etc for interest. If you purchase a ready made tortoise table then do make sure it is a sturdy one and not one of the cheap plywood type ones currently offered on ebay and similar sites at extortionate prices.
Hope this helps

You will not find it so easy to locate a horsfield baby as a hermanni or spur Jo so I would start lppking for a good breeder now. I do know of one in Sheffield and one in Devon so could pm their details if you like.
