whats the ideal depth of substrate for horsefields to burrow in cheers darren

At least a foot. They need to construct burrows rather than just dig down. Loose dry soil is bad for them. They need a substrate that can be watered like a plant. They will construct their own tunnels which then dry on the lining just as they would outdoors, a bit like a rabbit warren. If left to dry, tunnels collapse and the tort is not happy, constantly trying and failing to dig more tunnels You would not believe how many horsfields I have seen turn round completely when given the correct depth of substrate and allowed to tunnel properly as nature intended them to. If left to their own devices the same tunnel remains usuable by several torts for years.

Indoors my adults and sub adults have 2ft of top soil to dig in.

two inches?? that wouldnt even cover the shell :S

I'd say at least a foot but the deeper the better.

any tort whether it needs it should havre atleast 1 1/2 times double its shell height to rest in and dig in.

But for a burrowing species this needs to be a lot deeper to be kind to it. I also have it deeper than this for my non burrowing torts too for thermoregulation.
