I have heard of tubing the tortoises before, but have no experience doing so, but I much prefer to do it myself using panacur, you can get it in a pre-loaded syringe for about £5.

Hang on, be very careful with pre loaded syringes. They are probably 20 % panacur and designed for horses and dogs, they can be used on giant torts placing it on their food but not for small ones.

Stomach tubing is safe. I do it myself and use 2.5% panacur liquid at 3ml per kilo but if you don't feel confident then your vet can do it.

In general its repeated once or twice within a two week period.

Usually a poo check up every 3 months is wise and if parasites are found then worm.

I tube myself after being shown some time back by my vet.

I use for small tortoises 2.5% panacur 3mls to a kilo of animal.

I use 10% for adults as big as Redfoots 1.5 mls per kilo

I think it is 0.75 ml per kilo for your reds as the panacur is 4x strengh

Clive as they have a faster digestive tract I use 1.5mls for reds and its safety margin is quite wide and not had any effect from it

Having dealt with hundreds of imported tortoises and especially Leopards I'm trying to get across how important it is to treat these animals for protozoa rather than worms although both would not hurt.

You don't start having a problem with worms until the tortoise is so far gone that it cannot support them. What is usually responsible for the 'so far gone' part is protozoa.

I've gotten to the point of suggesting that they be treated regardles if protozoa is found or not in fresh imports and new acquisitions.

Flagyl (metronidozole) is the drug of choice and I suggest treating for at least three weeks (125mg/kg once a week).

You can use a liquid suspension or a tablet chip. The dosage does not have to be exact but it should be a little over than under.

do you test the urine first ed or doing you dose anyway. If you do check for urine whats the best way to get a sample ? do you leave them in a large plactic box and wait ?
