I'm no tortoise expert, but my understanding is that the plastron on the male becomes concave to facilitate an easier mating.

As far as the Article 10 paperwork is concerned, I do think this is now mandatory for all tortoises in the UK. If you haven't got any paperwork then my understanding is that you should be applying for it, but you will have to provide evidence that they were captive bred and not imported.

Also you will have to have paperwork for any ones you've bred yourself before you can sell them.

Someone else on here can enlighten you further, but that's definitely my understanding with protected species.

Have a look at this website CITES LEGISLATION

It explains which species need this paperwork. I know because I work at a wildlife sanctuary and we have 3 45 year old tortoises which have no paperwork and we've just had to apply for their Article 10 Certificates, because of the new legislation.

I think you need to speak to someone who has studied the legislation more than I have, because I think you may be on a 'sticky wicket' if you can't prove that these tortoises were captive bred.

TSKA Rory Matier should be able to advise you on this as he knows a lot more about it than I do!

Without the torts history/background, in the form of signed documentation/A letter from the previous owners, it is doubtful that Defra will issue you with paperwork for these torts ...T.T.
