Default Swimming backwards??

A question for 'Graham the Terrapin God' n' all...

Occassionally my RES swims backwards with his bum in the air. Is that praying or what?

It's a ritual they do to thank the god (small 'g' ) for his advice.

Does he do it for long? Sometimes they can get excess wind, as it works its way through their system it can affect their buoancy, when it reaches the back end prior to being vented in the usual manner it can make them swim in a head-down attitude!

This often happens with turts that have been ill and on antibiotics, the medicine tends to kill all the bacteria in their gut leading to excess wind until it re-establishes, but it can also be caused by a change in their diet, or something else entirely.

They also do this when they throw the engines in reverse to see something that they passed and might look good such as a morsel of food or something else that catches there attention... which... btw can be outside the tank.

This just made me think... why is a tank/viv good for a turtle and not a tortoise?

Mmmm... Ok..now you say that & I think of it..it may be sometimes after eating actually. He does not do it that often....Turtle farts rather than worship then? - but I'll keep an eye on it to see if any particular food causes it. Cheers little g.

Why does a turtle live in water and a tortoise on land?

It wasn't a troll. It is a valid question. Water turtles will do the same as tortoises only in 2 dimensions...

What is it acceptable to keep a water turtle in a viv and now a tortoise?

I like tortoises because they are way easier than keeping water turtles but I've kept both and I have known some serious water turtle collectors over the years and the work they put into them.

Regardless... water turtles do see out and some... just like some tortoises... seem to 'want to get out' on occasion because the seem to be able to see out.
