Smile My Tortoise table plan :)

I will hopefully buying a horsfield torsoise around late April time and want to make sure everything is ready for it.
I've designed and planned a Tortoise table (or a modified ikea table)
Take a look at it here.

Please if there is anything that I need to change that would be better for my tortoise let me know, e.g, changing the substrate, height of the T table walls, so on.

Thanks

Nice plan!

The only problem I can see is the basking rock (gest so hot it burns tort) and those little thermometers and humidity meter. Invest in an accurate digital thermometer with a probe

EDIT

And instead of a straw substrate use hemp

Thanks are the walls high enough? Is the substrate deep enough?

Looks very comfy - I don't have horsefields but I know they are obsessively keen diggers - I don't know how much substrate they need but as much as possible would be a good idea.

What a great design

As has already been said a digital in/out thermometer would monitor your temps better. Also I'd be tempted to move the uv lamp so it's closer to the basking lamp or buy the combined basking/uv light as you're buying a ceramic clamp light anyway. The little log ramps which you can bend to shape (Pets at Home sell them) make a nice addition as hides/bridges. Hemp would be a better alternative to hay. The basking rock isn't necessary and may get too hot.

It's a great design and admirable that you're spending so much time planning before you get your tort

Which ikea table are you using?

Oh, almost forgot to the forum.

You don't need to bother with a humidity thingy for horsefields - it's only necessary for tropical tortoises like redfoots. They will be ok with the same as us.

I've just been talking to someone who keeps horsfields and currently has hatchlings and they would advise the following:
  • No need for any hides as horsfields won't use them... they prefer to dig tunnels to going into hides.
  • Use a very deep substrate (sand/soil mix) with lots of rocks and slate incorporated. Don't bother with hemp or hay as it's impossible for them to construct a tunnel.
Here is a pic of their enclosure:

Pretty cool eh?

id take out the hay(or did u say straw?)substrate, not really necessary.
also, for a horsefield i don't think that substrate is deep enough at 10cm...
