Default Leopard Tortoise Bedding

Hi All,

I have a leopard Tortoise a few weeks now, he is doing really well. Brought him to the vet and got a good check over, he is really starting to eat better everyday.

I kinda asked this question already about what bedding to store in the base of the enclosure, at the moment the stuff i have is difficult from him to walk on so i was thinking of maybe some soil mixed with some sand or just soil? I wanted to grow some plants in his enclosure plus it would be far easier for him to move around on and with the basking light on one end i would image it would become harder soil hence making it more like their wild life habitat in Africa.

Heres a video of him over 1 week ago, it will show the substrate. I am still amazed how better he is moving around / eating since then.

I am not an expert just looking for opinions, someone did suggest a kind of substrate they use in horse barns but i really don't think it mimics their wild habitat?

Thanks in advance!

Michael

Just looked at the video, really doesnt look to be able to move to well on that substrate. Im not a tort expert.. but as no one else has answered i'll just say that I believe the sand/soil mix is good for Leopards, hopefully someone will confirm for you shortly.

I wouldn't use those pellets due to their protein leveles. That could cause a problem when eaten.

It's fine to use play sand and top soil mixed together 50/50 it's also fine to use abuoise hemp (horse barns) but I sand/soil for my hermans.

Hay, hemp, shredded wood chips are good substrates. I don't like the sand/soil for leopards because it is messy.

email me at epirog@comcast.net and I'll send you some notes I have on keeping Leopards.
