Default Why are Hermanns better?

I will be getting a tort fairly soon... I have been undecided which to get out of Hermans and Horsfields, and was interested in the Best Species? thread... why are Hermans so much more popular? I didnt think there was too much between the two of them, apart from the small difference in size.

Just interested..

Cheers

My choice between the two came down on the side of Hermanns because Horsfields dig down and tunnel so deeply... I didn't fancy one escaping from my garden every summer because I hadn't dug down far enough to make it horsfield proof!

Apart from that their care is pretty much the same, although a Horsfield will need a much deeper substrate (soil/sand mix) in their indoor enclosure than a Hermann. Heating, lighting, feeding is identical.

Exactly the same reason as Tina.

I suppose the same reasons that have been listed above.

Also alot of breeders will sell hermanns to homes were tort tables will be used on a more permanant basis, but won't home horsfields to the same kind of homes, due to their love of tunneling and burrowing.

To me though it came down to appearance in all honesty, i knew i could cater for either, and my horsfields have such amazing characters and grumpy looking faces i wouldnt change them for the world

You splitter boss, I thought you were going to have one of my loverly Ibera's.

To your question, One of the reasons Hermanns are so popular is that they are the most imported tort available. Horsfields, and other torts that do not require article 10's are also readily available.

Spur thighed tgi, tgg, and the likes of Marginated, are quite a bit harder to lay your hands on. Saying that though, my local garden centre, has just started offering Spurs from Turkey...T.T.

Spurs Thighs are by far the best tortoise - you can teach them to fetch sticks.
