I can understand you being gunshy... here... let me take some of the pressure off you... UVB lights are not necessary.

Your main concern is temperature. You want a basking spot. You can accomplish this with a 100w flood lamp from any hardware store.

To get around the UVB requirement... 1 or 2 hours a week in the sun would work... any of the fantastic supplements currently available would also work.

I recommend a diet called t-rex tortoise diet as a part of the tortoises diet... that would work also.

You do have more options than a UVB bulb... but... if you insist on the bulb... 100w flood... not spot... should be more than enough. T-rex distributes these also. They are self ballasted mercury vapor lamps.

Hi Goona and to this forum.Torts need uv so please get a uv bulb of some sort.I recommend getting an all in one uv,heat and light like the one drummerkid showed you,but if you can't then you can get a uv tube at 10% and a seperate one for heat and light.

I use a 10% UVB tube and a simple desk lamp for heat - if you go for this option remember to change the tube every 6 months

It depends on how far away from the surface/tortoise shell it is and how enclosed it is and the wattage of the bulb.

This is also another problem with the Mercury Vapor (UVB) bulbs... they are very sensitive to power surges which is why I stopped using them. You can't use a rheostat with them.

That is fine Trice.Just adjust the height or the wattage to get the correct heat from the heat bulb.
