thats why i put this into a new thread rather than remove it. I want all the people who have a problem to get it out of their system, but not only get it out of their system in a civilised manner. But to also SHOW proof.

I was asking because I was wondering about the amount of heat and sunshine you get compared to us in U.K seeing as you say that they do not need uv.I wondered if that was the reason why you don't use uv yourself.

As stated as CLOSE to natural as possible is nature wrong? well thats what you are saying

Yes improper diet PELLETS environment NO UVB AND VIVS

It angers people because most of what you say confuses people and goes against nature.
Nature is not wrong as long as the animal has total control and is allowed to exercise its instinct.

If what I say confuses people they can either ask me to clarify my point or... better yet... do a little research to understand the topic of discussion a little better.

I know you've seen this...

Manufactured Diets...Part 1

Manufactured Diets... Part 2

Now... your turn... with equally as clear an explaination.

To be fair though. i'm sure you probably get more sunshine than we do Ed.
even as i look out the window now, it's cloudy.
Last summer was really poor summer IMO. there was sun, but only a very short time of it,

You picked the wrong day to raise that point. We haven't seen sun here in 3 days... 2 of those days were nonstop rain.

I spent 25 years in NYC...10 of those years keeping chelonians. I think that was quite similar to the UK.

The closest thing we had to the UVB bulbs then were the Vitalite. That was the only game in town.

Again I'm not saying not to use UVB lamps. They are probably beneficial but they are far from being a necessity

they may be far from a necessity, or they may not.
but i think the majority of people would rather use it without the torts needing it, then not use them and find out something down the line that something went terribly wrong because they didnt use UV

I do not use them now because the cost now outweighs the benefit. I found with the diet I'm currently using there is no reason for me to use them.

If you look back on that other popular list around 2002. You'll find this very 'discussion'. I was a very strong advocate for the use of mercury vapor lamps... conditions and times change. I don't see a reason for me to use them and I'm just relaying my experience.

just a question for the people who are saying pellets are bad.
I've never used them myself etc.
but...

Would mixing them with weeds be a bad thing? making the torts have a choice between the weeds and the pellets on the bowl?

NYC is a fair bit hotter than anywhere in the UK in the summer - it's climate is more comparable to mainland Europe & the winters they have in NY are far colder than ours.

Weeds - at the moment I'm 100% weed feeding my tortoises for 2 reasons a) money - they're free and easily obtainable & pellets are not (free!) b) My tortoises thrive on them. However, if either of these factors changed I would consider trying pellets but as things are this seems unlikely.

UVB - My gut instinct is that UVB will have a positive effect on my tortoises so they are currently under UVB lights. I have no idea as to what extent UVB contributes to their wellbeing but it certainly won't do any harm so why take a chance? The costs for me are minimal - £20 starter kit and a new tube every 6 months - £15.
