I've been reading a book... a very good book actually... and here are a few quotes:
‘There are special fluorescent bulbs and mercury vapour lamps that provide ultraviolet light – specifically ultraviolet B waves (UVB) – which is essential for the natural metabolism of calcium.’
‘It is common practice when keeping tortoises in captivity to try and provide as natural diet as possible.’
‘Dietary Do’s and Don’ts
While many aspects of tortoise nutrition remain uncertain, there are few definite things you should and shouldn’t do when feeding your tortoise.
Do
- Provide a plant-based diet
- Feed as wide a variety of plants as possible
- Feed mostly leafy green plants
- Provide a suitable calcium supplement
Don’t
- Feed animal protein, like dog or cat food
- Feed a lot of fruit
- Offer spoiled or mouldy items’
‘As the hobby of keeping tortoises grows, commercial products made just for tortoises are making their way onto the market……… many of these items are of questionable value….. There are also some products that have been around for a while, and they do make providing good nutrition for your tortoise easier….. These are yet another route you can choose to increase the dietary variety…… There is one caution when using some of the grain-based diets….. it can lead to very rapid growth. Whether this is a good or bad thing is yet another topic of much debate, but it can be controlled by reducing the amount of food given. If any of these diets are used in feeding….. you should limit offering to once or twice a week.’
Would anyone like to hazard a guess as to who the author of this book is?
