Default clamping tortoises.

I dont know if i've brought this up, but again my grandad told me about when he was younger, they'd drill a hole through the shell to chain the tort up to the back garden, alot of people did this he claims.
Anyone else heard of it?

Where did i state that i agreed with it?
I told him that doing such a thing wasnt on, and i told him that he more than likely injured the animal.
But it is something that had happened. And i wanted to know if anyone else had heard of something similar

Yes, I've heard about it. There's a member on here actually who had one as a kid and he did it to his as it was seen as the norm

We had one when I was a kid and my parents used to let it hibernate under a plant at the bottom of the garden. It died in hibernation one year

I don't know whether they drilled it's shell though as I barely remember it... but apparently loved it when I was toddler. I must ask them.

Surely in todays minds people wouldn't even consider it....
but back then, apparently it was considered a normal practice, because their torts stayed out in the garden all year round.

The thing is, I'm not even that old and I can remember going to the market with my mum and seeing boxes of tortoises for £1 a piece and my gran used to buy them because she felt sorry for them all in those cardboard boxes on a stall like a piece of meat.

So back in "ye olden times" a tortoise was almost worthless, so a lot of people saw them as disposable. The one thing rising prices has done is make people aware of the value of the animal, making them think twice about doing things that might harm it.

Of course there is also a lot more knowledge and awareness these days too.

The sad thing is that it took money to enter in the equation for people to realise that what they;re doing is wrong
