It depends really...

How much space do you have for outdoor accomodation?
Do want one which hibernates or not?

Hi, and welcome

I bought a Horsfield last year and love him but although I researched I feel that I didn't do enough of it.

As far as I can tell (please correct me if i'm wrong) the med torts are easier to care for than the more specialised species of tort.

But ultimately its your decision, most commonly found are horsfield and hermans but please do not make the mistake I did. Just because the seller "says" that they are home bred doesn't mean they are telling the truth. Take your time and find a proper breeder who will (hopefully) be able to show you both parents and give decent care advice.

Hope this helps and good luck as they are lovely pets

I would say a med tort (one of the easiet types of tort to care for but hibernates) or a red foot. (doesn't hibernate but gets large and needs a humid enclosure).

Thumbs up

Hello there mate,

I would have to agree with drummerkid on this one, mediterranean tortoise's are pretty hardy and they cope with our summer time really well, obviously he will be kept in a viv for the first few years of his life, my tortoise started living in the garden from about the age of 5, he has his own house and now owns the garden, alot of people dont hibernate there tortoises which can cause internal problems and they can develop diseases aswell, i would recomend a book called mediterranean tortoises and the author is brian pursall. it covers just about everything.

Hi Lee how do you know that not hibernating causes internal problems and diseases?
