hermanns or horsefield are considered, generally, a good first starter tort.
the heat lamp goes off at night as their body needs to cool down, also so they know its night!
can i also say, which i can see you are already doing, but make sure you research them until your 100% sure about them, before getting one! but like i say, your doing that already... good on ya!

im unsure if it is same for med/non-med torts cos i dont know enough about both.
but hermanns for example you need a calcium supplement which you would dust on their food daily. and theres nutrobol which you'd dust on growing torts food daily and adults about twice weekly.
good luck!

not at all... you need a spot light fixture, such as a clip on light or even a desk light and put a spot light bulb in it, which makes your basking area. you need a cool end of the table too so your tort can cool down when needed. the cost is minimal, just the cost of running a lamp!
