Its all in the hormones dude...

'Anabolic processes tend toward "building up" organs and tissues. These processes produce growth and differentiation of cells and increase in body size, a process that involves the synthesis of complex molecules. Examples of anabolic processes include the growth and mineralization of bone and increases in muscle mass'

....something to think about.

All of the tortoises in the 'manufactured diet' post are mine... some successes... some 'failures?'

What response are you looking for?

I'd rather not... I have trouble coping with the simple.

You might be onto something... take the ball... run with it... post the results and see the response.

African Spurred Tortoise - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pretty good article. I dont think pyramiding would occur very often in the wild unless the habitat is affected by other conditions (ususlly humans) creating too much food etc.

I agree with you there, I've had many problems with my tort since i had him e.g sleeping alot, not eating. But I raised the temperatures just very slightly and the change in his overall behaviour is unbelievable. And i'll be the first to admit that i didnt know enough or do enough research. And i think thats alot of the problem now animals that need specialist care are becoming too easy for people with very minimal knowledge to aquire.but thats a different topic all together. And i'm pleased to say that thanks to this forum and others like it i have turned a MASSIVE learning curve.

Heat (above 60F) & humidity levels is definately a critical varaible for happy tort. The Wiki article I posted above is one of the best 'simple' reads covering this plus diet, excercise & growth rates. I should add the article related to Africans so the needs of a European differ somewhat but the variable factors that need controlling are broadly the same - just differing levels to try & create what would be their natural environs. Greek climate v South African basically.
