Default some advice on hermanns?

Ive been interested in owning a tortoise for a while, I was originally looking at horsefields, and have been scanning this section reading posts. I came across a thread saying that Hermanns are preferred, one of the reasons being they dont dig down so much.
So IF I get one, it would be a Hermanns.

Ive read a 4x4ft table is minimum, but could it be different measurements so long as it still has plenty of floor space?

Im looking at doing a stack in the future for my lizards, and have been thinking about having an 8ft viv at the bottom - 2ft wide. (I know they cant go in vivs) but instead of having all wooden sides and back, use mesh. I could have the wood high enough that he cant see out, and there would be ventilation all along the sides and back. The front I could even do higher so he cant see the glass.
Hope that makes sense..?
Would that be OK for a tortoise do you think?

It isnt really an option to have a tort table as my cats would quite happily jump in lol. Then again, so would my little boy when hes walking about.

If that sounds OK, I will then go on to ask more questions.

Thanks.

Iberas are exactly the same as hermanns (should never be mixed tho) also marginated. Have a search see what you like

I like the look of iberas. Why arent they as common as hermanns/horsefields though?

Do you think the viv would be OK for a tort?

Thanks.

Bear in mind that if you have a hatchling you won't need an enclosure as big at first (med torts take around 10 years to grow to full size)... mine for my hatchling is a 3ft x 2ft ikea underbed box.

Lots of people use indoor rabbit cages... they work just as well as a table and you can get them in different sizes.

An 8ft x 2ft viv would be more than enough space for a pair of western Hermann's (which are the smaller race and the more common) You wouldn't have to do a thing with it outside of leaving the top open... man... the things you could do with such an enclosure...

I just realized... when you say viv... do you mean all glass?

A rabbit cage might be a better idea then, stop anyone getting in.

Ive only ever seen them in one size though, will have a look out for them though.

How do you go about feeding them though? I have nowhere around me that will have all the weeds, other than dandelion.
Can you use bagged lettuces etc from Sainsburies?
Thanks.

Do you mean where I said an 8ft viv at the bottom of a stack?
I would do it all in wood, but rather than have completely wooden sides and back, have half mesh.

There's a sticky at the top of the page with edible weeds/plants... you probably already have some in your garden. You can buy seed mixes too which you can plant up.

This is quite a good site for basic info on their care and feeding:
