Default Longevity of Tortoises

What plans have you tort owners made for your pets futures then? Chances are some of them will easily outlive you & your children.

Apparently 'Timothy '(a female Med Spur-thighed) was the last surviving member of the navy that took part in the Crimean war (1850's) when he died in 2004. 160 years old.

When I'm dead... do you really think I care what happens to my tortoises????? Think about it. They are in my care for my pleasure... why do you keep them?

Now... my family capitalizing on their disposition... that's a good question.

You don't care what happens to them when you are no longer here to look after them?

Give that just a smidgen of thought... I'm dead... why would I care.

Why would I care about anything... there is a seriously good chance ... that I won't have a conscious thought about any of this crap... I could be wrong... in which case... I'd be in hell.

Well depending on what torts you have That would mean they wont live as long as they could which is bad - but I know what you really mean.

Serously though the breeding of such long-lived creatures will create issues for our decendants. A kind of family heirloom. Only a couple of years ago a tort in Australia died that was owned by Charles Darwin & sparked a lot of his interest in evolutionary theory. That's cool.

That's actually an urban legend... Her name was Harriet... Anyway... she was owned by Steve Irwin... actually his dad... but that tortoise has sparked many a story... there is actually a book on that tortoise which either proves or dispells the notion that it was C. Darwins tortoise. I'll try and find the book and post the reference.
