Default Snake Food List

this is an overview of what foods you can get, and a general guide to what they snakes are suitable for. i haven't gone into detail with the species that will generally take each item, its best to research and try different foods with your own species rather than follow guides exactly.
use only pre killed foods, unless in the case of your snake not feeding at all then you may want to try live feeding, but only under strict observation and only under extreme circumstances.
Also, if you are using freshly kiled prey items, please do so in a humane manner, keep the prey items housed suitably and make the death as quick and painless as possible when the time comes.
to select a good size prey item, aim for something that will initially put a nice bump in your snakes belly, so just slightly wider than the thickest part of your snakes body.

Mice
are the general workhorse of the snake feeding world, available from pretty much all reptile shops and some petshops too. mice are available in a few different sizes
- pinkies - are newborns, suitable for young snakes of many species, such as corns, kings and rat snakes (colubrids).
-fuzzies - are young grown on mice, and are suitable for young pythons and boas, and grown on colubrids.
-adult - adult mice are usually white, although you may be able to get different coloured in certain places. they again, come in size grades of normal, large and XL. normals are good for adult colubrids, large are suitable for bigger specimens of colubrid and for juvenile-adult pythons/boas, and XL for juvenile-adult pythons/boas.

Rats
again, are available in different sizes, based pretty much the same way as mice, but each stage is bigger than the mouse equivalent stage.
-pups/pinkies - baby rats, suitable for young pythons/boas and grown on colubrids.
-fuzzy/weaner - grown on rat pups, suitable for young pythons/boas and for adult colubrids/
-adult - are fully grown rats, graded in size again, normals for growing pythons/boas and large colubrids, large for pythons/boas and XL for bigger pythons/boas.

Rabbit
will eventually become among the main meals for those who have large pythons and boas such as burmese, reticulated and adult boa constrictors. again these are graded in size, but generally only adult rabbits are availble to the general keeper, although pink rabbits and fluffs are also available from certain places, which would be suitable for younger pythons/boas.

Birds
you can get a few different types of bird for your snake to eat, chicken and quail being the 2 most popular that i have come across. whilst it is good to have a variety of food available to feeding your snake, birds should not become the staple diet as they do not have the nutritional value that a rodent has.
- chicks - are generally taken by pythons and boas, although larger coloubrids may be able to take them also.
-adult - suitable for larger pythons and boas.

Miscellaneous
other foods avaible to keepers include hamsters and gerbils (excellent for royal pythons), guinea pigs (yes, those sweet little things are also on the menu), lizards, inverts and fish. obviously the last 3 are specially for select species such as rough greens who primarily take inverts and so on, do some reading up to what your specific snake will benefit most from.
you can also buy such products as snake sausages i believe, but i would personally get the snake onto natural prey items rather than manufactured as natural food normally has the nutrition needed already, and getting snakes to take a sausage could be a real nightmare as it may not smell/taste right.

for links on the internet to frozen foods, try checking out the LINKS board on the forums and trying a few different suppliers on there, although ideally you would want a supplier close to home in case of any emergencies.
If you are having any problems with your snake feeding, try to find out what its natural food is, such as the royal pythons natural prey is a rodent called a gerboa, which is very similar to a gerbil so trying one of those may provoke a feeding response. obviously dont go out and try to bring home deers, antelope or caimans for your bigger snakes though!
