oooh wasn't aware that hoggies hibernated under natural conditions. "Harmless" depends on how badly you react to a bite........

true but it was this that caught my eye the most

Food
These snakes are voracious feeders and consume any smaller animals they find. Frogs, toads, lizards, small snakes, reptile eggs, ground-nesting bird eggs, rodents, and small birds. Carrion is also consumed and young snakes may apparently eat insects. I found an adult male in Louisa County on 5 July that had consumed two turtle eggs. Other authors have reported western hognose snakes feeding upon turtle eggs as well (Barten 1980, Iverson 1990, Kolbe 1999, Platt 1969). Western hognose snakes are not constrictors and simply swallow prey alive

Don't forget these guys are found way up in canada, so they will hibernate. best breeding results come from hibernating any way. In terms of the bite, they have a Duvernoys gland, which produces venom. I can testify how nasty the bite can be, after 7 HOURS in hospital!!!

i really want a hoggie - but i am a bit apprehensive about the venom...

just out of interest, all colubrids have Duvernoys gland! just the likes of corn snakes etc dont have the dentition with which to inject venom lol ^^
