i have one thing u may want to think about as far as i am aware you couldnt keep a dead rat or mouse for a year and it still be any good? even frozen the goodness would eventually be gone am i right? so a years supply wouldnt be possible unless you bred your own live rats and killed them

I think people have raised some very good points here, but some have been quite forcefully put across.

I hope that I can say on behalf of people, that it's only out of care for the animals that all these criticisms arise

But going off the last post - I think you will need to give some serious consideration to breeding rodents

I've just read through the whole thread and there's some good advice here for you Lorcan. It's not an easy thing to live on an island that far from the mainland, but lots of things come at a price and if you really want a snake, then stick out for the Royal you want and get everything you need for it before you get the snake.

I'm assuming you (or someone you know) is going to build the viv for you and that you're going to buy all the necessary equipment you need by post to set up your habitat. (you haven't mentioned anything about setting up your viv on this thread, so I'm not sure what your plans are for this), but it is something that needs some thought and probable advice from other Royal keepers on this site. This is all something that has to be done before you collect your snake.

You have aready said earlier in the thread that you could get guaranteed next day delivery on the island, so surely that means buying supplies of mice/rats shouldn't be a problem for you, as long as you pay extra to get the ice packs in with them to prevent them from defrosting too much, so you shouldn't need to buy 12 months at a time! Starting to breed mice/rats to feed your snake requires quite a bit of thought as to whether a) you want to do that and b) you can kill them when the time comes - not everyone can!!

At least you're asking the right questions and are putting a lot of thought into this before you go ahead and buy your first snake, so you're starting off on the right foot!

Good luck in your search!

Thanks!
Ive emailed a few places about getting rats and mice send here, but if not, we go south regularly enough that more could be picked every 2-3 months.
As far as building a viv goes, then I am looking into that! Mt dad is a both a perfectionist and a joiner, so i dont need to worry there, all i need is the supplies to build it. Also, the stuff you need to put inside, can be found in loads of threads around this forum.
But thanks for the advice!

Take it slowly, get everything perfect, and if you live at home with your Dad, get him on your side........everything else will all fall into place for you and it will be worth the wait.

As you're no doubt aware there are threads on this site covering every angle of reptile ownership. There's one about best places to buy frozen food, so check that one out.

Good luck with your viv - if your dad's a joiner, you're more than half way there! And even if you can't buy your snake by post, you can certainly buy everything else you need on here, or on ebay or on plenty other sites where it can be posted out to you!

I live up in Fife, Scotland which is much more southern than you. However, I always pay the extra for the ice packs, but becuase of the long journey mine always arrives just in time as the ice is all melted.

As too storing mice for a long period. I vacumm pack all the mice I get to retain freshness, and even though I never have them long enough to comment on long term storage, the food vacumm packer I use claimes you can keep meat in a good freezer for up to a year when vacumm packed.

So, there is light at the end of the tunnel and there will be solutions to every problem.

Same here - the ice is always melted and once I got a pack where they had all thawed out, because they sent it a day too soon and I was out! E-mailed the company (Frozen Direct) and told them what had happened and they said throw it out and we'll replace, which they did!

Sounds like we're solving some of these problems we spoke about earlier which is good.

Frozen should only really be kept in the freezer for 3 months, so if this is practical, then everything should be good to go.

Vivarium building is fairly simple so not really a main concern of mine just yet... this can be fixed up no bother.

Mainly just the frozen thing i see as an issue, if your vet is happy, and parents (sounds as though your dad will play a part in this building your vivarium which is good )

I can verify one of my females has ovulated so once she reaches her pre-lay shed i can give you a more accurate time of hatching... then the obvious wait to establish them as feeders. I would if i were you, keep them on rats, so hopefully any place you order from should be able to provide rats for you - basically a good diet which will keep them happy at even adult size. Is it male or female you're after?

I hate to say this, but I keep mice for longer than 3months, not much longer, but longer! I've not noticed any problems with my snakes, the eldest of which is 10 now and has always enjoyed 'rude health'. What's everyone else's viewpoint on this?

Good news for you Lorcan, things are looking promising!

This is crazy! Why am I getting excited?
