Including the corn, i spent nearly £160 on my first set-up. That was from a petshop and i knew know better. My second set-up, again including the corn, cost around £65. So personally, I wouldnt buy a 'starter kit' because they are well over priced. Id get a list of everything you need, then shop around

Complete Reptile Starter Kit
Corn Snake Basic When looking at starter kits for your new reptile you should really know what you are getting, being breeders we understand the needs and requirements of your species, most starter kits that are sold lack basic essentials that are crucial for the keeping of your reptile in captivity.
Digital thermometers and Thermostats are essential in any set-up be it basic or advanced, the thermostat is there to stop any heat source from over heating the tank,
ALL HEAT SOURCES SHOULD BE CORRECTLY THERMOSTATICALLY CONTROLLED.
Analogue thermometers are also not ideal as they never really give the correct temperature see the following link for information. Analogue vs Digital in the thermometer bouts.
When comparing our starter kits to the more useless ones avaiable from other sellers check that they include thermostats and digital thermometers, as these are normally left out as they are expensive additions.
Our basic kits contain everything you need to be able to provide your animal with the correct thermal gradient and housing requirements.
The Complete Corn Snake Kit Basic Includes the following
Habistat Mat Thermostat
Habistat Heat Pad 6" x 11" 7w
Exo Terra Faunarium Flat Large
Exo Terra Hide Cave (Small)
Exo Terra Water Dish (Medium)
Exo Terra Plastic Plant (Small)
Digital Thermometer
Cork Bark Hide Small
The Corn Snake Manual

We always advise our customers to buy the advanced kits as it will save money in the long run.

Don't listen to the so called experts who say "you can't put your reptile in a big vivarium as it will get intimidated"

This is not true, think how big the tank is if the reptile was to hatch in the wild, as long as you provide the reptile with everything it needs, basically the correct thermal gradient, correct diet and places to hide the reptile should thrive.
The above is an old pet shop trick of getting you to pay for the set-up twice as you would have to upgrade the tank later in the reptiles life.

Personally i think designing and building your own Viv is the way to go. It works out cheaper and you can tailer the Viv to the specific needs of the snake, as this is a corn snake it would be a nice easy build. Then shopping round for the equipment that is needed.

The money saved on building your own Viv can go towards a better quality snake.

This comment was quite interesting. Do others agree with this or is the general opinion that a small viv is needed initially, then an upgrade once the snake grows?

I entirely agree with it, as long as you furnish a big Viv properly. In the wild a snake would find an area to live that has lots of cover, so as long as you provide lots of cover for your snake, it would even be better for it. It would have to be done properly though, I think, not newspaper, 2 hides and a water bowl for a baby corn in a 3 foot Viv!

In the case of Royals, it might even prevent the stress and eating issues that usualy (I know not all Royals have problems, but quite a few do) follow from moving home as they get bigger. But you would have to have a lot of hiding places and things placed in there to make the Viv look less like an open space.

Roewammi, have you thought about making your own hides? Just use some thin wood (about £5 for a big sheet of it in B&Q) and nails, then cover it with tile grout, or just varnish. You could make loads and different sizes. For a water bowl, it depends on the size of the snake, but I have big ceramic dogs water bowls for my Royals, cost £3 from local pet shop. As for a thermostat, ebay is really good.

Best of luck
